Soapstone or Kisii stone as it is known locally is quarried near the town of Tabaka in W. Kenya. After selecting the right stone for the job, Paul then carves out the birds using a machete, adze & finally a small knife for the detailed work. After it has been sanded smooth it is passed on to Julius who dyes each penguin to the desired color and adds an incised design if needed!
